Virtual Coaching For Parents of T1D

Diabetes Sweet Talk is a coaching program that offers unique courses and webinars designed to help T1D parents get support — so thoughts about diabetes management and “good numbers” don’t take over your life.  We work together so you feel less stressed while managing your child’s Type 1 while also improving relationships with your child, your partner and — most importantly — yourself.

As a therapist and mother of three, two of whom have T1D — I wanted to take my experience and create the program I wish I had when my kids were diagnosed. Sweet Talk is a coaching group — not a therapy group — It is a resource for caregivers wanting to manage stress, connect with other parents, and put diabetes in its place.

Here’s what participants have to say:

When I registered for [Sweet Talk], I was feeling overwhelmed — I was new to diabetes and this diagnosis. I was hoping to gain knowledge from JoAnne to know what to expect and to validate my feelings. I also wanted to hear from other people what their experiences were. I didn’t know what to expect from the course but in three one-hour sessions, we covered a lot. There was a little bit of everything: discussion, group activities, but also teaching tools and useful information. Little videos that I’ve even gone back to look at. It’s a well balanced perspective on your first year of diabetes with additional support from people that understand what this is all about. I thought the course was extremely well rounded. I really loved it. It validated those feelings of “you’re diving into the deep end.” It took some of the weight off.

My hope going in to Sweet Talk was that I could manage my stress levels. I was in a place where diabetes was overwhelming. Of course I want what’s best for my son but the hope was that I would be — I learned the terminology as JoAnne says — “good enough”. That’s what I had hoped for — to “put diabetes in its place” and not let it rule our world. Obviously, I’m not going to settle. I’m going to continue to do all that I can. But in doing Sweet Talk, I had a mental shift in the sense of good enough is okay. The first part (Put Diabetes in Its Place) set me up — it helped me process some things. And the second course (Creating Change) helped me put it into action. I’m going to take those tools from the course with me. I feel like I have a neat foundation and the exercises I can go back to and use them so I can continue to work through different issues. And I see the change in me. I’m a little more relaxed.
